Jordan Gama is the CEO of TOAM, the Secretary of TOAM’s Board and the President of AfrONet. Jordan, who is from the Ruvuma region in Songea, holds an advanced diploma in Community Development from the Tengeru Institute of Community Development in Arusha.

From the very beginning Jordan took part in the National Agriculture Movement (NAM) whose concept, in combination with the Advanced Organic Training action plan, led to the establishment of TOAM as an organization. “Organic Agriculture is rooted in the four principles Health, Ecology, Fairness and Care. In order to sustain the earth and the people we need visionary pioneers who advocate and take responsibilities to change the current agriculture system to a more sustainable, healthy and supportive one. We should seek a balance between profits and sustainable usage of natural resources.”

As head of TOAM, Jordan oversees the implementation of the organizational strategy and leads the planning process, program development and project implementation. He is responsible for TOAM’s governance and management systems, as well as overlooking financial and human resources and reporting to the Board, members and donors.

Sandra is responsible for financial reporting, accounting, administration, financial monitoring and procurement. She has a Bachelor degree in Finance from the University of Dar es Salaam and is currently engaged in a Master’s program on Finance at the University of Strathclyde Tanzania. Originally, Sandra is from Mgazini in Songea Region.

Organic agriculture for Sandra means “a better way of living. Once you know about the importance of food quality you start taking better care of what your family and friends consume. You start supporting a sustainable way of agriculture, without the use of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers or genetically modified organisms simply because you begin to understand the risks implied. You start believing in a new way of natural food production that balances the profits with the impacts on society and nature.”

Mongo, who is originally from Mwanza in Northwest Tanzania, studied agriculture at the Sokoine University in Morogoro and has a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the Institute of Rural Development Planning in Dodoma. In addition he finished a one-year program on Financial Corporate Management in Moshi. Before joining our team he worked at an international confederation as Project Manager for Good Governance in Morogoro.

At TOAM, Mongo is planning and implementing projects. He conducts activities on-site and is one of our Agronomists who train farmers on organic farming at project sites. Mongo considers Organic Agriculture to be “natural, not synthetic systems that involve a minimum of industrial inputs, e.g. chemicals, artificial fertilizers, etc. Organic agriculture could help mitigate the effects of the Climate Change on which farming activities may have a strong influence.”

As Organic Guarantee Systems Officer, Saidi’s main roles are to facilitate trainings on Organic Agriculture and Internal Quality Management Systems (IQMS). He guides stakeholders through national and international quality standard processes and certificates. Originally, Saidi is from Morogoro but he studied in Tanga and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Ecotourism and Conservation from the Sebastian Kolowa Memorial University (SEKOMU).

For Saidi, the term organic agriculture, according to the four principles, implies “a production system which does not involve the use of synthetic inputs. Furthermore, it is connected to health and environment concerns. Farmers can receive additional income, especially through international organic trade possibilities. Organic mostly also implies the ideas of fairness in labor, income sharing and socio-economic impacts.”

As Marketing Officer, Jane builds capacity for smallholder farmers to access markets and links producers to local, regional and international buyers. She has a diploma in Marketing from the College of Business Administration in Dar es Salaam, a Bachelor in Business Administration from the University of Dar es Salaam and a Master’s degree in Marketing Management from the Mzumbe University, Dar es Salaam. Before TOAM, Jane worked as Marketing Officer and Branch Manager for the TOAM member STA TANICA CO., dealing with domestic and international trade in coffee.

Organic, for Jane, is “a way of life. It is the true way to health for all living things, including animals, plants and humans. It is clear that consumers are questioning more and more the industrialized, profit oriented way of agriculture. The awareness for healthy food and food production leads now to the matter of quality control of organic produce on which we are strongly active in.”

As Communication and Information, Anatory is responsible for press and media releases, publications, communication with farmers and members, social media and organizational communication. Anatory comes from Mwanza on the southern shores of Lake Victoria in northwestern Tanzania. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication and Marketing from the Saint Augustine University in Mwanza and a Master's degree in Public Administration from the Mzumbe University in Dar es Salaam. Before joining TOAM Anatory worked as an Assistant Secretary of Financial Institutions for the Tanzanian Union of Industrial and Commercial Workers, (TUICO)

Organic for Anatory “means a lot. It is important for me to know how to save the environment and know how to get healthy food. I would like to support people knowing about preserving and conserving our environment through agriculture.”

As TOAM’s accountant, Nilian prepares accounting records, documents financial transactions by entering account information, summarizes current financial status by collecting information, prepares the balance sheet, profit and loss statement, and other reports, prepares payment information and supports the Finance and Administration Manager. Before joining TOAM, Nilian worked as a primary school teacher. She has a Certificate of Education from the Eckernforde Tanga University and is currently working on an Advance Diploma in Accounting at the Tumaini University in Moshi. Nilian comes from the Karagwe district in the North of Tanzania.

When asked about organic, Nilian said: “When I look at organic I think of health. The way of organic is healthy not only on one level. It starts with soil treatment, continues with water supply, cultivation, avoidance of pesticide, way of harvesting, transportation and ends up in the final product for the end consumers.”

Doris is responsible for maintaining and securing the organizational records and she assists the Finance and Administration Manager in various administrational tasks. Doris comes from Songea, Ruvuma Region in southeastern Tanzania. She has a Diploma in Records Management and Archives from the Tanzania Public Service College in Dar es Salaam.

Organic agriculture for Doris means that “products are grown or made without the use of artificial chemicals and with the focus of obtaining the natural balance for all living things.”

Abdallah is the Coordinator of TABIO (Tanzania Alliance for Biodiversity), an alliance of civil society and private sector organizations concerned with biodiversity conservation with an emphasis on agricultural biodiversity for livelihood security and food sovereignty. As coordinator, Abdallah organizes TABIO members and implements project activities. Abdallah is from Tanga, in the north of Tanzania. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro and a Master’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Zimbabwe in Harare as well as a Master’s in Human Ecology from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium.

Organic for Abdallah is “using natural inputs in agriculture.”

As OGS-Assistant officer, Mapambano assists in facilitating trainings on organic agriculture and Internal Quality Management System (IQMS). He also assists producers to process organic certification as well as providing technical advice to organizational members and other stakeholders on organic production and certification.

Mapambano Petro Nyabenda comes from Kigoma region in western Tanzania. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) in Morogoro Tanzania.

For Mapambano, Organic “means the farming system that principally enhances mutual benefits to producer, consumers, soil and the earth as the universe through its principles of health, care, fairness and ecology."

 

 

Sengwile assists in organizing and facilitating the duties of the information and communications department and managing the organization's blog (www.kilimohaitz.blogspot.com). He is from Songea, Ruvuma, in southern Tanzania. Sengwile has a bachelors degree in public Administration from Kampala International University (Dar es Salaam Campus) and a diploma in Journalism from Time School of Journalism. Before joining TOAM, Sengwile worked at kaymu.co.tz an online shopping website.

 

 

 

Josephine is an Intern at TOAM. She assists in mapping various organic projects, actors' locations, organic products' locations and other related functions. She has a Bachelor of Science in Geo-informatics from the University Of Dodoma (UDOM).

To Josephine, Organic Agriculture means “A natural, healthier and cheaper way of producing crops without using chemical inputs which facilitates growth, increases life expectancy and reduces prevalence of diseases”.

Emmanuel is an intern at TOAM. He assists in organizing and facilitating training for farmers interested in organic agriculture. Originally he is from Songea, Ruvuma region. He acquired a certificate for Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development in Eastern Africa from the Baraka University in Kenya. Before joining TOAM he worked as a Project Officer at a World Bank farming project.

Organic for Emmanuel “refers to our grandfathers, who originally relied on the natural resources available in and around their villages. They had clean water, natural forests, rich soil, fresh air, and as a result healthy products.”

 

Pelesi believes that organic agriculture "is a sustainable way of living. It implies living today while considering the future generation and therefore implementing sustainable modes of production to improve family health, farm economies and self-reliance. Organic agriculture generates environmental goods and services, such as reducing groundwater pollution and creating a more biologically diverse landscape."

Zubeda is Program and Administrative Assistant at AfrONet. She performs operational and administrative functions and duties and supports team members in daily projects operations and in information management. Zubeda is from Dodoma region. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Nature Conservation from the Sebastian Kolowa Memorial University (SEKOMU) in Tanga.

For Zubeda, organic means: “The Mother of Nature, since the system promotes and enhance the health of agro-ecosystem, health of producers &consumers, and also it emphasizes in eliminating the use of synthetic inputs in food production and processing.”

Mwanzo is the Photography, Media & Communication Specialist at AfrONet. He uses his skills in branding the image of the organization, communicating with members, actor, supporters and stakeholders and coordinating projects. Mwanzo is in charge of developing the organization communication strategy and deliver it to both internal and outside stakeholders. He has a Master’s degree in Mass Communication. Before joining AfrONet he worked at different media houses in Tanzania, Sweden and in Norway. Prior to joining the organic sector, Mwanzo had, extensively, worked in the field of visual communication and teaching photography and Media Studies. His aspiration to join the sector is to fill the information gap that exists between and among different actors across the organic sector.

Organic for Mwanzo means “A farming system that is naturally nurtured."
